Was Violet King the first black lawyer in Canada?
Violet King, ’53 LLB, the first Black graduate of the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, made her mark on the legal world when she was called to the provincial bar in 1954, becoming the first Black woman to practise law in Canada.
What is violet king famous for?
A descendant of African-American settlers, she was the first Black person to graduate – in 1953 – from law school in Alberta. A year later, in 1954, she became the first Black person to be called to the Alberta Bar and Canada’s first Black female lawyer.
